Building: Utrecht University Library
Architect: Wiel Arets architects and associates b.v.
Year: 2004
Location: Heidelberglaan 3 de Uithof, Utrecht, The Netherlands
(Nick Ceulemans as project collaborator, 2002-2004)

The walls are black, the chairs are black, the computer screens are black, the book shelves are black. The help desks and some sofa's are red... A black box that sucks up its users like a sponge and retains the outward comportment of an inviolable monolith while plant patterns filter sunlight entering the building.

An extensive system of reading rooms with spaces of differing scales that offers a rich diversity of characters, despite the omnipresence of concrete and glass. Austerity promoting silence and studiousness.
